Happy hour in NYC
What is a happy hour, and what counts as a weekly special?
A happy hour is a window of lower prices at a bar, usually late afternoon on weekdays. A weekly special comes back on the same day each week, like $1 oysters on Mondays or tacos on Tuesdays. Trufa lists both, and every card says which days it runs.
What time is happy hour in NYC?
Below 14th Street the usual window is 4 to 7 PM. 84% of the 201 bars on the board start by 4 PM, and 27 run past 8. The shape moves by neighborhood. Battery Park City runs 4 to 6 PM, Chinatown runs 4 to 5:30 PM and Greenwich Village runs 3 to 6 PM, and 4 more keep their own hours, while 5 neighborhoods keep 4 to 7 PM. It is a weekday habit with a weekend edge: 87 of the 201 bars run a deal on Saturday and 93 on Sunday. Past 8 PM the late-night board takes over, with 27 bars, 20 of them still pouring after midnight. Every card prints its own window, and the home board counts down to the next one from the clock. Where are $1 oysters in NYC?
36 bars below 14th serve oysters at happy hour, 5 of them at a dollar: Ama Raw Bar East Village, Bar Belly, FKA:, Little Rebel and The Ten Bells. The next tier is $1.50 at 11 bars, Ama Raw Bar West Village and Canto West Village among them, then $2 at 17 bars, 8th Street Winecellar and Arvine among them. The other 3 bars sit between $2.50 and $3.50. Most of the oyster bars are in West Village, with 11, and East Village, with 6. A dollar oyster is mostly a weekday window, 4 of them run one on Saturday or Sunday. Across every price, 25 of the 36 oyster bars run one on the weekend. The oysters page lists every bar by price, and each card says which days it runs. The full list →
Is there a happy hour at lunch in NYC?
33 bars below 14th run a deal through lunch, on the board at 1 PM, 16 of them with food on it. The other 17 bars are a glass at noon, a wine or beer price with no kitchen behind it, which is why the food count is printed on its own. Most of the lunch deals are in East Village, with 10, and Financial District, with 9. On the board at 1 PM means the deal’s window covers 1 PM on at least one day, so a noon-to-three lunch counts and a four-to-seven happy hour does not. 11 of the 33 run through lunch on Saturday or Sunday as well. The usual lunch window is 12 to 7 PM. The lunch page lists them by neighborhood, with the window each card runs. On at lunch →
Are there weekend happy hours in NYC?
87 of the 201 bars on the board run a deal on Saturday, and 93 on Sunday. 79 run one on both days. 8 pour on Saturday only and 14 on Sunday only. The usual weekend window is 4 to 7 PM, the same shape as a weekday. Most of the weekend deals are in East Village, with 30, and West Village, with 21. 11 of them run past 8 PM on a weekend night. Weekly specials count here too: a Monday oyster price is a weekday habit, but a Sunday taco price is a weekend deal, and the card says which day. The board’s Today and Tomorrow chips show what is on for the day you tap, and every card prints the days it runs.
What is the lowest happy hour drink price in NYC?
Eastpoint pours tecates at $3, the lowest drink price on the board. By category, the cheapest beer is $3 at Eastpoint, wine is $5 at Art Bar and cocktail is $4 at Idaho. 53 bars pour something at $5 or under, and 95 at $6 or under, out of 172 bars with a checked drink price. The short list ranks every category by the lowest checked price and the hours a week the deal runs, from deals checked in the last 30 days, so the floor there is a floor somebody confirmed. A price on a card is the price on the day it was checked, and every card says when. The dollar oysters are the cheapest thing on the board but not a drink, and they have their own question above. Eastpoint →
Are happy hours legal in New York?
Yes. New York allows happy hours, unlike a handful of states that ban them. The rules fall on the bar, not on you: no unlimited drinks for a flat price and no drinks given away, which is why you will see a $6 spritz and never an open bar.

Using Trufa
Do I need an account, and is it free?
Free, and you can browse, search, use the map and spin the machine without one. An account lets you save bars, confirm a deal, rate one and start a vote; voting on a friend’s link needs nothing.
What do Happy now, Today and Tomorrow mean?
Happy now is every deal pouring this minute. Today and Tomorrow show what runs on that day, and the hour menu narrows it to a time. Every option carries a count, and one with nothing behind it is greyed out rather than hidden. Happy now →
What is Last call?
A deal with under 20 minutes left leaves the grid for its own short row, so the default order never sends you to a window about to shut.
Why is a bar under Not today?
It has a deal, just not on the day you are looking at. The card says which days it runs, and Tomorrow shows what opens next.
What is the spin machine?
A slot machine that picks tonight’s bar from the deals pouring now or within half an hour, inside a walking radius of where you stand or a neighborhood corner. Share the spin and friends can say they’re in. Spin →
How do votes work?
Pick two to five bars and send one link. Friends vote without an account and can change their vote until it closes, and everyone sees the same result. Start a vote →
Can Trufa tell me when a saved bar is pouring?
Two emails, both off until you switch them on in your account: a heads-up in the late afternoon on days one of your saved bars has a deal on, once a day at most, and a Thursday note on what is worth the walk below 14th. Every one carries a one-click unsubscribe. Email settings →
Can I save a bar?
Yes, with an account: tap Save on any card or venue page and it joins your list. Saved also keeps a Been list of the bars you’ve marked, which the spin machine can skip. Saved →
Behind the board
How does Trufa check a deal?
Every deal passes a check before it publishes, by an editor or against the bar’s own website word for word, and every deal says who checked it and when. 202 deals on the board. 179 checked in the last 30 days, 4 still waiting, 19 gone stale. Of the recent ones, 14 by Trufa staff, who call the bar, visit or read the chalkboard; 3 by people at the bar who tapped Confirm this deal; 162 against the bar’s own page, where our reader matched every price and every hour word for word and two reads agreed. That is 561 reads of the bars’ own pages in the last 30 days. One crowd tap never overrides a staff check, and a page read never claims to be a phone call. Past 30 days a deal is marked stale and drops in every list until someone re-checks it, and anything nobody could verify shows as Not yet verified or not at all. How we check →
What does Confirmed mean on a deal?
Who checked it and when: Trufa staff, people at the bar who tapped Confirm this deal, or the bar’s own menu, website or Instagram, each labeled and never blended. The full rules →
How fresh is the board?
178 of the 201 deals on the board were checked in the last 30 days, and the newest check was 3 days ago. Past 30 days a deal is marked stale and drops in every list until someone re-checks it.
How does a bar get on Trufa?
It passes a check first: an editor, or a word-for-word match against the bar’s own site. Send yours through Submit a spot and an editor checks it. Submit a spot →
How is the short list ranked?
Ranked by the lowest checked price and the hours a week the deal runs. The short list →
Where does the Google rating on a card come from?
From Google, with Google’s name on it, refreshed about twice a month and hidden once it is more than thirty days old. It never decides an order on Trufa.
Does Trufa cover Brooklyn, or anything above 14th Street?
Not yet. We started below 14th because that is where we drink, and the rest of the city is coming. The neighborhoods →
How do I add a bar that isn’t on the board?
Send it through Submit a spot, account or not. Nothing reaches the board on its own: a person checks it first, and it publishes when it passes. Submit a spot →
A price or time is wrong. How do I report it?
Tap Not quite right? on the deal. It files a report an editor reads, and two reports of the same kind make the dispute public on the venue page while we look. Anything else goes through Contact. Contact →
